The chairman of a fan-run football review rejected Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow’s claim that his recommendations could “kill the goose that lays golden eggs” in the Premier League.
Former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch MP calls on the government to create a new Independent English Football Regulator (IREF).
The review argues that this is necessary for the long-term financial stability of men’s professional football in the country.
Purslow said there was a risk of over-regulation of the sport, saying it was difficult for Premier League clubs to do more than they are currently doing.
But, appearing before a digital, culture, media and sports committee on Tuesday, Crouch said: “I don’t consider this to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Much of what we are presenting is about long term sustainability and the report as a whole is about building trust in the system.
“What we have right now is a system that is prone to vulnerabilities. If you remove some of these vulnerabilities with better regulation that actually encourages growth and investment in English football.
“I don’t see this as an attack on the goose that lays the golden eggs, quite the contrary.”
