Yesterday, the outgoing national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, called on Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki to speak out on allegations that the party raised money from him in the run-up to of his emergence as a PDP candidate for governor of Edo in the 2020 election.
Yesterday, in a farewell session held in honor of the leaders led by Prince Uche Secondus at the party secretariat, the PDP denied demanding or collecting a financial gratuity before handing Obaseki the party ticket during the elections. September 2020 elections.
Speaking at the event, outgoing National Party Advertising Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan said, “Let me say without mincing the words Governor Obaseki owes the members of this national working committee, NWC , the responsibility to wash our names in front of the public.
“I want to note that this NWC did not ask Obaseki for any form of gratuity before getting our party ticket.
“It is also important to reaffirm that this NWC has not demanded any form of ‘tax’ from Governor Obaseki and neither have we collected the same. He therefore has a duty to clear our names.
Ologbondiyan’s request is not unrelated to the allegations against the NWC led by Secondus by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, when he called them a few months ago tax collectors.
Ologbondiyan said, “Before the 2019 elections, we had already added three governors from Sokoto, Kwara and Benue states. The Speaker of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives led many of their colleagues to team up with the party. The All Progressives Congress, APC, adopted reckless maximum rig to pull out Ekiti and Osun.
“We rebuilt the party in terms of content and character and that made it an attraction. We came out of the election with 17 governors, the APC robbed Imo State, while three governors then left the party to pursue personal efforts that were not the fault of NWC.
“The 2018 national elective convention that produced our presidential candidate was deemed the best. It was hotly contested and not by consensus. In the end, none of the wannabes left the party.
“The NWC has carried out reforms that have ended the use of Ghana Must Go to win nominations or tickets, restructured the workforce and taken a smart approach. For many years, the party was unable to register its members online. Today our members register online and our party has become digitally prepared before any other party in our country. “
The farewell session brought together prominent party leaders, including the new national president, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the elected national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the former Minister of Special Tasks and Intergovernmental Relations, Tanimu Turaki, among others.
