KANSAS CITY, Mo. – First Student fired a school bus driver in Kansas City over video of the driver and a student at Congress Middle School using “racist and inappropriate language.”

Congressional Middle School Principal Chris Early on Tuesday sent families a letter about the incident and said the Park Hill School District had asked First Student to remove the driver from all routes of the district.

“We are advising First Student that we no longer want this driver to work on routes for the Park Hill School District, and we are following our student discipline policies,” the letter said.

A spokesperson for First Student told KSHB 41 on Thursday that the company was “disturbed” by what it saw in the video.

“The driver’s interaction with the students was inappropriate and insensitive,” the spokesperson said. “We do not tolerate this language in any way. The driver is no longer employed by First Student.”

The Park Hill School District is reaching out to the students who were on the bus to offer support and find out the full story.

The district is also using a culturally appropriate crisis team “to support any students or staff who need help dealing with their feelings about this incident,” according to the letter.

“We will be placing a member of staff on the bus for the next few weeks to provide additional supervision and support,” the letter said.
