SEATTLE – In a letter to families, a teacher at Rainier Beach High School used racist language when speaking to a student during class on Thursday.
The letter, signed by administrative staff at Rainier Beach High School, was confirmed by a spokesperson for Seattle Public Schools.
“During classroom instruction, while speaking to a student, the teacher used highly inappropriate and extremely offensive language towards a student,” the letter reads.
Staff said they were committed to full transparency and said the teacher in question “used the N word”.
“We immediately informed the district human resources team, who will investigate,” the letter continued.
The teacher was ordered not to report to school on Friday and will remain on administrative leave pending the conclusion of an investigation.
“There is absolutely no excuse for this type of behavior, and it breaks our heart to have to report it to our students, staff and the school community. Our school stands in solidarity against all aspects of racism, as does our entire district, ”said staff.
The letter said the school would offer students and staff full support as they deal with “the news of this incident.”
“We want our entire school community to know that bringing these types of incidents to light is crucial because there is absolutely no tolerance for hateful and racist comments and behavior at Rainier Beach High School or elsewhere,” concludes the letter.
