Kevin Campbell believes Nicolas Pepe is only responsible for the lack of playing time with Arsenal as rumors continue that he is considering a winter outing.
Pepe, 26, signed for the Emirates in the summer of 2019. The Gunners paid Lille a club record of £ 72million for the Ivorian striker who arrived with great fanfare in north London. But he failed to achieve the impact he expected, leaving Mile Arteta frustrated and sending him up the ranks.
After scoring 23 goals in his last season with Lille, the French ace has only scored 25 times in 98 appearances. He is yet to score in the Premier League this season after five starts and seven outings.
It was reported in November that Arteta was looking to sell Pepe in the January transfer window. And football.london suggested earlier this week that the player was becoming frustrated with his situation at Arsenal.
He wants a winter outing, according to the information, preferably on loan. The club will then have to make a decision on their long-term future next summer.
Reports suggest the former Angers star is currently making a desperate figure. And former Arsenal striker Campbell believes it will have a ripple effect on the entire staff.
“Maybe Pepe’s attitude isn’t right,” he told Highbury Squad, via football.london. “And that sends the wrong message to the team. If you’re not doing the job, if you’re just prowling around, it sends the wrong message to the team.
Pepe victim of the Arteta system
Arsenal started 2021-2022 in poor form, with three consecutive top-flight losses. However, they managed to come together and achieve a series of decent results.
They won six and drew two before crashing 4-1 at Liverpool. Monday’s 2-1 loss to Everton was a third loss in four outings and they have now slipped to seventh.
Arteta needs his big guns to shoot, but the system the Spaniard uses might not be right for Pepe. He’s got a pace to burn that can’t be fully utilized in a possession-based game.
Eddie Nketiah currently appears before him in Arteta’s mind. And the former Gunners midfielder justified his decision to bring in the young Londoner the last time.
“He does everything in training what you’ve seen him do in 25 minutes here,” Arteta said after Everton’s loss. “Every day. That’s why I chose him.
