BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The Burlington School District is seeking an Equity and Anti-Racism Leadership Consultant.

Henri Sparks, school district racial equity director, explains that an equity and anti-racism leadership consultant is a person or team of people who train teachers and administrators to understand their own biases and how these biases affect student learning.

“And how they can go back and start working with the people they supervise or the students they teach,” Sparks said.

Sparks says the consultant will be tasked with responsibilities such as interviewing principals to talk about their individual understanding of systemic racism and providing them with differentiated training.

Sparks says they want anti-racism training to push school leaders out of their comfort zone, but to take place in a safe and supportive atmosphere, build confidence and allow vulnerability.

“If your stomach doesn’t grieve you, you don’t learn. If you’re not uncomfortable with some of the changes and some of the things we’re trying to do, like dismantling the culture of white supremacy and racism, then you might not want to be in the district ” , Sparks said. “Because we want to make sure that we are doing all we can to support our students and families in the global majority and students who have been historically marginalized and that starts with our district leaders. “

Superintendent Tom Flanagan said, “This is essential work that our team must engage in as we seek to create a positive school climate, deep learning experiences and a curriculum that reflects attitudes. equity and inclusion that we value so much. “

The Request for Proposals for an Equity and Anti-Racism Leadership Consultant is available on the Burlington School District website.

Proposals for this position must be submitted no later than January 22. Proposals should describe how the consultant would approach the work.
