WWE
WWE Raw continues to feel like a second-rate show compared to SmackDown and has bad ratings to back it up.
Which is odd because, as die-hard fans surely know, a favorite like Big E is the red brand’s best title holder and a name like Becky Lynch is the best female champion.
So what gives?
It’s important to be as clear as possible here: it’s not Big E’s or Lynch’s fault. Raw’s worst rating and worst ever in key demographics lasted a long time, regardless of who held the two best titles in the series.
That it’s Big E and Lynch is incredibly disappointing, of course. The culprit (reservation) struck again in both cases.
With Big E, the fact that WWE used him as a botched solution to the show’s problems just didn’t help. He basically came out of nowhere to win the title. An abandoned feud with Aleister Black (because the Dutchman was freed) turned into a Money in the Bank briefcase win, only to get it stolen, only to get it back before eventually cashing in on Bobby Lashley to win it all. .
He has since been mainly in holding-type feuds, often reviving The All Mighty or getting into tag team matches. It happened before suffering a loss to Roman Reigns in a champion vs. champion game in the Survivor Series.
It’s almost as if WWE is just banking on the fans’ goodwill for E through her time with The New Day in the hopes that this would help matters. It didn’t, and now it looks like it could take the title away in favor of someone like Seth Rollins for WrestleMania season 38.
Lynch’s situation, one way or another, has been terribly worse. She had this unexpected return from her maternity leave at SummerSlam in what should have been a huge fan reaction. Instead, she turned on her heel, burying Bianca Belair in 26 seconds to reclaim her title.
As expected, WWE inexplicably trying to boo one of its most beloved superstars for whatever reason has been a facial plant. It’s not that Big Time Becks isn’t trying or not great, it just doesn’t make sense.
Since repeatedly defeating Belair in what seems like an unlimited number of times since, Lynch has looped back into another tried-and-true feud with Charlotte Flair and then teased about dropping the title to Liv Morgan, only to that his opponent falls hard after years of struggling in the midcard before finally having a chance.
To its credit, WWE is at least trying with these two as SmackDown goes back for another Brock Lesnar v Roman Reigns case that will run into at least WrestleMania. But the approach with Raw’s two best stars was incredibly dense for no discernible reason, and a general disinterest from fans would reinforce that idea.
What could be most frustrating of all about Raw’s Purgatory shows featuring these two stars is that for one it was so easy to predict that things would turn out this way. And two, it’s not hard to fix.
Perhaps WWE will correct the problem in time for the ‘Mania’ season, however. All he has to do is take the risk asking a member of New Day to win the Royal Rumble and pick Big E. The story of the brothers fighting for the top spot is being written and could end with be memorable, if not guarantee that at least one of them will become a main event star for good.
Lynch is a little trickier. She’s already beaten Flair again and it’s an exhausting feud. Starting over with Belair could also seem on the side of exhaustion. But whether it’s Rhea Ripley as a rising rising star or even a veteran like Alexa Bliss, The Man Who Comes Down To The Show of Shows will be satisfying considering how she used the heel tactic to beat Morgan lately.
If WWE can easily pull off that Lynch Heel Run as a way to build someone else, hindsight might judge it better than it looks right now.
But again, WWE likes to go back to its old ways. It could mean a new feud for Lynch and someone else taking the Big E title at WrestleMania on April 2-3. This kind of reactionary stuff is why the company has this rating issue with Raw in the first place.
There’s an old idea that the best of the best talent should be able to make anything work, but that’s not quite fair for the two champions mentioned here.
Big E has been technically in WWE since 2009 and has never been much higher than team status, even resulting in a clean loss to Reigns when he was champion. Lynch, perhaps the outright face of the business right now and returning from a pregnancy, has been asked to return as a heel.
Suffice to say that this is hardly a lack of talent, and it would be a shame if WWE treated him as such. With those two Raw headliners, it should technically sound like the “A” show on SmackDown right now. But the reservation, long-term thinking and care required from those around the Superstars just didn’t measure up, which is a real shame.
