Significant police resources reviewed Raeesah Khan’s request

SINGAPORE – Police said on Monday (December 13) they had deployed significant resources to investigate former Workers’ Party (WP) MP Raeesah Khan’s allegation in parliament over an assault case sexual, according to a Straits Times (ST) report.

Police officers have combed through all visitor records at all Singapore police stations since January 1, 2017 following Raeesah’s complaint.

Raeesah alleged in a parliamentary session on August 3 that she had previously accompanied a rape victim to a police station and claimed the victim had been the subject of callous remarks by a police officer about about their clothing and questions about their drinking.

In a subsequent parliamentary session on October 4, Raeesah upheld her claims when questioned by Justice and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.

On November 1, Raeesah made a personal statement to Parliament, clarifying that she lied in the House on August 3 and October 4. On November 30, the WP announced that Raeesah had stepped down as party member and MP.

The revelation prompted the establishment of a Privileges Committee (COP) to investigate Raeesah’s lies in response to a complaint filed by House Leader Indranee Rajah.

“A substantial amount of resources have gone into this, as it was a statement made by a member of parliament, and was taken seriously and at face value,” police said on Monday.

Police also considered the possibility that Raeesah accompanied the alleged victim without entering a police station.

As such, police reviewed more than 1,400 cases of sexual assault and other related cases from 2018 to 2021, before narrowing the list to cases that may match Raeesah’s request.

The police statement comes after the release on Sunday of the third COP report in which WP leader Pritam Singh testified last Friday that Raeesah’s allegation did not negatively impact the police.

Police said in addition to the loss of working hours to investigate the allegation, there was also a delay in dealing with other cases and cases, according to the ST report.

Police added that public confidence was essential for officers to carry out their duties.

“Comments that downplay or dismiss the impact of false allegations against the police are disheartening. They can also affect the morale of our officers, who work hard every day to keep Singaporeans safe.”
