RICHMOND – Some hospitals in the Reid Health multistate area are reporting that they don’t have room for more patients, not enough high-acuity staff to care for patients, or in some situations both.

>> United States surpasses 800,000 COVID-19 deaths

“The region’s health systems are being overrun with COVID-19 cases, leaving little to no resources for other medical needs,” Reid Health said in a statement. “This is an emergency and demands that everyone in our communities do their part to reduce the spread of the virus. “

The healthcare system believes the new wave is likely a consequence of Thanksgiving and other holiday-related gatherings, causing the agency to worry about Christmas and New Year celebrations in the coming weeks.

“It is imperative that everyone take all steps to prevent further spread,” said Reid Health.

The Indiana Department of Health reported that Wayne County had 485 cases per 100,000 population last week, with the county’s test positivity rate reaching 8.95%.

As a perspective, Ohio currently sits statewide at 718.5 cases per 100,000 people. In the Miami Valley, the county with the most spread of COVID-19 is Auglaize, which is the 10th highest county in the state with 994.4 cases per 100,000 population. Montgomery and Greene counties lie towards the bottom of the state with 535.8 and 501.4 cases per 100,000 population.

In Ohio, hospitalizations rose to exceed the peak statewide drop with 4,615 people actively hospitalized with COVID-19. This year’s fall peak peaked at 3,699 people hospitalized in late September. However, the overall peak during the pandemic is still that same week last December, when 5,308 people were hospitalized with the virus.

News Center 7 has contacted the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association to see if it has capacity issues as hospitalizations continue to rise locally.

Kettering Health said it remains able to manage all patients, including those with COVID-19.

“Like many hospital systems in Ohio, we have seen an increase in the number of COVID-19 patients. We are constantly assessing the pandemic and adapting our approach to provide the best possible care for our community, ”said Kettering Health.
