Dr Laila Mintas, currently subject to a restraining order issued on behalf of PlayUp US where she was previously CEO, responded to the media coverage by citing allegations that she attempted to harm the company.

In a statement to SBC Americas, she said, “I am a major shareholder of PlayUp to date and have invested seven figures of my own savings into the business. It doesn’t make sense that I would have made any of those comments that are cited in the file or tried to destroy a deal to sell PlayUp because I would have benefited from it along with all the other shareholders.

“All of the claims made in the statements are false and my attorneys are working to file my response to these claims shortly to tell the true story based on written evidence.”

Mintas said she was unable to comment “in full detail at the moment” as it would force her to make negative comments about Australia’s leaders.

She added, however, that over the past two years, she had created the company PlayUp USA from scratch “… having been the US CEO of PlayUp and the only person in the field for almost a year and a half”.

Much of the media coverage has focused on the failed sale of PlayUp to the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. To this effect, Mintas argued: “The company is in possession of an email from FTX stating the facts for which FTX has rejected the deal which I will submit to the court, which clearly describes the reasons on the Australian side of the management team as a deal breaker. “
