Former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani has denied allegations by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhary that Haqqani raised funds for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) while sent to the states United from 2008 to 2011.
Fawad Chaudhary, speaking to the media, claimed that Haqqani had raised millions of dollars in funds for the party through a company created by the PPP.
While responding to the allegations, Haqqani said he was aware that the ruling party was facing difficulties in disclosing its foreign funding sources and Fawad offered such frivolous allegations to distract from this. He added that the allegations made by Fawad came ten years later and without any evidence. He advised Fawad to focus instead on providing a lead on his party’s foreign funding sources.
While defending himself, the former ambassador said he had never gone to any party fundraising activity during his three-year tenure. Haqqani added that files were present to verify his statement.
Haqqani said his main goal during this time was to improve relations between Pakistan and the United States. He alleged that the only politician who traveled to the United States to raise funds during this time was the current Prime Minister.
