Don’t blame Sean Desai for Chicago Bears defensive failures

[ad_1]

Things didn’t turn out the way first-year defensive coordinator Sean Desai had imagined when he accepted a promotion. By most measurements, Desai has seen the Chicago Bears defense regress, and with a new coaching staff likely to enter, it will be difficult for him to hold onto that opportunity.

Bears fans thought they had the next star defensive spirit with Desai and are disappointed with the results so far. While it’s fair that Desai had his issues and could improve, it’s hard to say he was a failure as the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator.

We have noticed in the past that he has made a lot of changes and tried different things. Some worked and some didn’t, but he showed his ability to adapt and not stagnate.

Beyond his plan, there’s the reality that no matter what he calls it, no one can save the Chicago Bears defense.

Let’s look at the players.

On the defensive line, Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack are absent. The duo are not just two starters, but rather the two best defenders of the roster. It is not easy. With borderline depth issues, Bruce Irvin was second on the team in pass-rush snaps just a week or two after signing.

At linebacker Danny Trevathan barely played, and Alec Ogletree is another low-end signing, this one happened in late summer. He entered the season with a question to the second cornerback.

Kindle Vildor was on the bench, Artie Burns gave up a few big takes and they mixed Duke Shelley, Xavier Crawford, Marqui Christian and even Eddie Jackson in the slot. Then, safely, Jackson, Deon Bush, Tashaun Gipson, and DeAndre Houston-Carson all missed the time.

You can certainly blame the defensive coordinator, but you can also find that he works with low end names. Jalen Tabor, Bruce Irvin and Alec Ogletree weren’t the players Desai thought was going to need big performances this season.

Desai wasn’t perfect, but he found himself in a dead end.
