Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa took responsibility for his side’s 7-0 loss to Manchester City, saying “What I offered was not good enough”.
An injured Leeds side were beaten at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night with Kevin de Bruyne featured in City’s seventh consecutive Premier League win. It was the heaviest defeat in Leeds history.
Bielsa was without Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford, Liam Cooper, Rodrigo, Pascal Struijk and Robin Koch, while his bench was on average 19 years old.
The result leaves his team 16th in the standings, five points ahead of 18th place Burnley, who has two games in hand.
After the full time whistle, Bielsa said: “There is nothing positive to take from our performance. I can’t find anything that could be of value.
“What I offered was not good enough. You can distract when some things work and others don’t, but when nothing works, the decisions of the one in conduction define what happens.
“The ideas, the solutions, what I came up with and organized, none of that worked.
“At no point did we get to balance the game. The feeling we got, everything they tried we couldn’t stop and everything we tried didn’t thrive.
“In their half, nothing happened and in our half everything happened.”
When asked if this was Leeds’ worst performance in the Premier League, Bielsa replied: “Yes, of course. It’s not that City played very well – it’s much more visible how badly we played than how well City played.
“City play like this all the time, or like this, but we’ve never played so badly in these four years.”
Leeds will face three tough games ahead, against Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa ahead of the New Year.
