Kim recently opened up about the backlash she received for seemingly appropriating other cultures. But according to Kim, she’s not trying to appropriate anyone. She only wears braids to appease her 8-year-old daughter, although she and her sisters were known to wear different styles of braids long before their children were born.

For years, Kim and her sisters have sometimes faced criticism for apparently attempting to recreate looks worn by women of black, Asian and other ethnicities and cultures. Kim wore her hair in braids before North was born, but as her eldest daughter got older, Kim apparently became more comfortable wearing her hair in ‘Bo Derek’ style braids and other looks from cornrow. Since the Kardashians are half Armenian and half white, they tend to be accused of trying to appear more ethnic. Kylie Jenner is constantly accused of blacking out her photos to present herself as a person of color. Although the sisters have children with black men, critics say their biracial children did not give them a public pass to style their hair in ethnic styles.

Kim recently spoke to iD magazine about the cultural appropriation reviews she receives and explained why she chooses to wear her hair in braids. After noting that she “would never do anything to make a culture her own,” Kim admitted that she rubs some people the wrong way when she wears her hair in braids. But according to the founder of SKIMS, Kim only wears braids to appease her eldest daughter. “Honestly, most of the time it’s from my daughter [North, 8] asking us to do matching hair, ”Kim explained.“ And I had these conversations with her that are like, “Hey, maybe this hairstyle would be better for you and not for me.” Kim claims that. she only wears braids with North to “not make a big deal out of it” as her daughter really wants to wear matching hairstyles with her mom.

The owner of KKW Fragrance also attributed her Armenian origin to the reason she wears braided styles. “But there is also a history of braiding hair in Armenia, and people forget that I am Armenian too,” Kim added. Apart from her hairstyles, Kim and her sisters have also been accused of working on their bodies to possess body shapes that black women have naturally. While Kim claims her body is all natural, many critics believe that she, Kylie Jenner, and Khloe Kardashian got Brazilian buttocks for more curvy shapes. When asked if the Kardashians promote unattainable standards of beauty, Kim was the one who said no because they work hard for their bodies and so can others.

With Kim’s response to the cultural appropriation criticisms attributed to her daughter and her half of Armenian heritage, fans called on Kim not to take much responsibility. But Kim has a habit of gossiping negatively about her looks and style. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians family constantly receives negative reactions because of their appearance. Even if Kim were to give a more sorry and thoughtful answer, there would be critics who would find something wrong to say. Kim loves to wear braids, even though she thinks she only wears them to make North happy.
