In December 2021, several media outlets and social media users reported that a sign at a restaurant at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) in Alaska criticized US President Joe Biden for the shortage of workers and the need to reduce working hours. ordinary opening.
On December 14, for example, Fox Business ran an article with the headline, “Sign at Alaska IHOP Accuses Biden” Of Having Free Money “For Staff Problems:” Nobody Wants To Work. “”
A sign at an IHOP in Alaska said the franchise restaurant was cutting hours due to staff shortages and blamed President Biden’s COVID-19 relief programs.
“Due to the fact that Biden gave way too much free money and no one wants to work anymore, we are forced to cut back our hours during this week,” reads the typed sign posted at the counter of an IHOP in Wasilla. , Alaska. He indicates that the restaurant will now be open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
“Thank you for your understanding and your patience,” he concludes.
This report, and several others, cited a widely shared December 10 tweet posted by @ ThatOtherDude12, whose account has since been deleted. The tweet contained a photograph of what appeared to be a typed sign, ostensibly in the name of the restaurant management, which read:
Due to the fact that Biden gave way to [sic] lots of free money and no one wants to work anymore. We are forced to reduce our hours during the week.
MONDAY TO FRIDAY Open 7 a.m. Closed 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Open 7 a.m. Closed 10 p.m.
Thank you for your understanding and patience. [Redacted] TOGETHER
The anti-Biden IHOP sign was real and was displayed by an employee at the Wasilla, Alaska location. As such, the basic claim at the heart of several reports and social media posts, as of December 2021, was correct and, therefore, we are giving a rating of ‘true’. Some outlets initially misreported aspects of the incident – including where it happened and when – but no detail fundamentally altered the main claim, which was confirmed by the company itself. same.
In an emailed statement, an IHOP spokesperson told Snopes:
This panel was posted last month [November 2021] at one of our franchise stores in Wasilla, AK and was immediately removed upon being notified. This was an unauthorized act of an individual and does not represent the views of IHOP or the local franchisee.
We asked the company if the person who posted the anti-Biden leaflet was an executive or non-executive, but received no clarification in time for publication.
Several media outlets, including the Daily Mail, the New York Post and BoingBoing, initially reported that the incident had occurred in Arkansas, but later corrected the error. The Daily Dot and the Daily Wire had not corrected the same error, dated December 15. The confusion may stem from the IHOP statement circulated to the media, which referred to “Wasilla, AK”, initials some journalists may have been mistaken. for those in Arkansas (AR or Ark.).
Additionally, although the panel photo went viral in mid-December, it was actually taken in November and posted online at that time. It’s unclear who originally posted it online, or on what platform, but we did find an article on Reddit as early as November 1.
Although elements of the story were misreported, the main claim has not been substantially distorted: as the company itself confirmed, an employee at Wasilla restaurant did indeed publish a blaming flyer. Biden for the staffing issues at this location and the reduced hours.
