Bungie HR director resigns amid allegations against the studio

Gayle D’Hondt, senior director of employee relations at Bungie, has left her post at the studio.

The news comes just days after reports emerged that Bungie employees experienced sexism, racism, discrimination and abusive leadership while at the Destiny company.

IGN now reports that d’Hondt sent an email to Bungie employees announcing that she has stepped down from her role as HR manager.

It is not known if she will stay with the company. According to the email, D’Hondt said she “will be working with Holly [Barbacovi, chief people officer] and the Bungie leadership team to determine the appropriate next steps. “

The email began with her thoughts on her 14-year tenure at the studio, saying she wanted to do “everything in my power to ensure that everyone who works here is a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.”

She added that there is a need for the human resources team at Bungie to “move forward” and that it should ideally be “largely made up of people new to Bungie”.

D’Hondt wrote: “I know you have to trust them to be your advocates – not labeled as ‘enablers’ or seen as corporate resources that offer bad actors a haven.”

The outgoing HR manager also reflected on her own experiences of toxicity at Bungie, including exposing someone who had abused her: a male executive, “someone I thought was my friend,” who went on to be dismissed.

She also referred to the time she spent resolving “deeply difficult interpersonal conflicts”, which included firing employees for “performance, bad behavior and for discrimination, racism and sexual harassment.”

“I am proud of the work I have done in this company,” she wrote. “I think I made recommendations that were in the best interest of our employees and in the service of the company we want to become. I also think that we made mistakes, and that in order to become the best version of ourselves – the company that I know maybe – we have to recognize them and face them, in good faith, and grow together. “
