LTHS Sub quits for now, blames rise of virus

LA GRANGE, IL – A substitute teacher at Lycée Canton de Lyon said this week he had suspended his status with the school, saying the number of unvaccinated and “poorly masked” students was a problem.

Joseph Yount, a retired clinical psychologist who lives in La Grange, told the school board he has seen the number of unmasked students increase.

“The discipline of the LT mask that I observed while replacing is getting out of hand,” said Yount, a 1969 Lyon Canton graduate. “This is especially evident to me when students were openly defiant and refused masking requests the day after the last board meeting. This was a drastic change in the attitude of students towards high conformity a few weeks ago. “

He did not say why things might have changed after the board meeting. In recent meetings, enemies of the mask have spoken out against the mandate of the state mask, even suggesting that this requirement is a sign of approaching Marxism and fascism.

Yount cited statistics showing a growing number of coronavirus cases among students and staff in the Canton of Lyon, reflecting a statewide trend.

For the two weeks ending Thursday, the school reported 34 cases of coronavirus among students and seven among staff. In the previous four weeks, the school had seen 14 cases among students and three among staff.

According to the school’s website, 57% of students and 91% of staff are vaccinated.

“I don’t blame the board or the administration for the increase. You’ve done a great job trying to maintain a safe environment at LT,” Young said. “The blame lies squarely on the students and families who refuse to embark on a simple series of measures to protect their health and that of the rest of the community.”

At the same time, he said his wife, Jane Yount, was immunocompromised.

“I have been forced to temporarily suspend my submarine status because I cannot endanger my family by attending in person until the numbers improve,” Yount said.

The school board generally does not respond to public comments.
