NBA players have big egos, and once someone hits a nerve, they’re ready to fight back. It’s nothing new, it happens all the time, but sometimes megastars take things to the next level and speak directly with those who have tried to smear their names, indulging in swear words.
After becoming an analyst, Charles Barkley learned that some people would not allow certain comments from him and will let him know when they get the chance. It’s well known the time he called up Kobe Bryant for only taking one shot in the second half of a game to prove he had no help. Kobe didn’t appreciate this and left on Barkley.
He also said harsh words to LeBron James, with the King responding to them in a big way.
These situations taught a lesson to the 1993 NBA MVP, who recently explained that players reacted differently when he praised them than when he ignited them. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Chuck recalled the times he went against Kobe and LeBron and the difference that makes a compliment against criticism.
“When I get compliments from guys they never fucking call me. Kobe Bryant, whom I love, and rest in peace, I said for three or five years, he was the best pro player in the world, and one night against the Phoenix Suns, he didn’t shoot any shots in the game in the second half, and I went on him after the game. … He called me from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. morning in the morning, cursing me like a dog. The best thing about it was that was all the text. He called me all the names in the book.
“I have always said how great LeBron James is, I admire him as a person, he is one of the 5 or 6 best basketball players I have ever seen, I have said something about him and he laughed at me. But I’m still laughing. I’m like ‘These guys never call me when I tell them how awesome they are’, so I learned that I just had to face it. ”
