ISLAMABAD: Following allegations regarding the funding of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT), Prime Minister Imran Khan submitted an affidavit qualifying all statements made in this regard as “false and defamatory”.
The affidavit was shared with the media by the Prime Minister’s Office after the Prime Minister watched the court proceedings online from his office on Friday in the presence of his lawyer, Senator Waleed Iqbal.
During the hearing, the prime minister said decisions on the hospital’s investment plans were made by the expert committee without its interference.
The proceedings were led by District and Extra-Sessional Judge Muhammad Adnan in the 10 billion rupee libel lawsuit filed by Imran Khan against former Defense Minister Khawaja Asif.
Senior PML-N leader Khawaja Asif made allegations of embezzlement and money laundering of SKMT funds at a press conference on August 1, 2012 at Punjab House and then repeated the ” fabricated statement “the same night on a private TV show. program.
The affidavit stated that Prime Minister Imran Khan was “SKMT’s largest individual donor from 1991 to 2009” and that the investments – contrary to the allegations – were fully recovered by the trust without any loss.
It has been said that “fabricated and unfounded claims” have been used to undermine people’s confidence in the SKMT.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, in his comment to the online hearing, said the Shaukat Khanum Trust is the only free hospital for cancer treatment in the world.
“It is unfortunate to bring unfounded and fabricated allegations against a welfare agency,” he said, expressing confidence that the court would deliver an “exemplary verdict on the baseless case and set a precedent.”
