The Los Angeles Lakers have fallen short of expectations this year, having started the season 12-12.
While many are quick to blame head coach Frank Vogel for the squad’s struggles, Lakers star LeBron James defended him, speaking to reporters on Monday:
“I think criticism comes with work, you know? Frank is a strong-minded guy. He has a great coaching staff. And we, his players, have to do a better job to come out and produce on the pitch. So we “are a team and an organization that doesn’t care about adversity, that doesn’t care about people saying things about us, obviously, because it comes with the territory.”
James added that the team are used to hearing outside noise but choose to ignore it. He said Vogel does the same:
“And we’ve got a lot of guys on this team who’ve been bulletin board material for quite a long time, so that doesn’t really bother us. So everything we do stays in-house in terms of how we prepare and how we prepare. “You for our next opponent and how we prepare to improve. Frank doesn’t care and we don’t care what other people say either.”
Vogel was also asked if he thought there was added pressure to be the head coach of the Lakers, and he dismissed the idea:
“Not really. There are going to be criticisms with this job. It’s something we’re all used to. And I’ve been a coach for 10 years, I’ve seen it all. Is it more national? Yes, it is more national. Is there a bigger fan base in this market in Los Angeles? Yes there is. But it’s there for every head coach, and it’s something I don’t know no. So it just comes with the job. “
The Lakers have struggled to find consistency this season. Los Angeles has only won three consecutive games once this year. The team just lost 119-115 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.
The Lakers return in action Tuesday against the Boston Celtics at Staples Center.
