In an interview with The New York Times, Taylor Sheridan spoke candidly about the conflict between the show’s stellar numbers and its lack of grand prize nominations. He admits he’s not trying to please the critics, whether they love or hate “Yellowstone”. “I don’t do it for them, I do it for the people who live this life,” he said, referring to the harsh ranchers lifestyle portrayed on the show.
He also said he believed “Yellowstone” was receiving unfair criticism, explaining that he had an unconventional and illegal approach to telling a Western story. “People who eat it eat it and those who try to look at it with a critical eye see a mess,” he said (via NYT).
“But that’s what I love about ‘Yellowstone’, the way it goes from campy to melodramatic to intensely dramatic to violent,” he continued. “It’s every old western and new western and soap opera put together in a mixer. And yes, I think that infuriates and confuses some people who study storytelling” (via NYT).
“They don’t understand why this thing is such a hit,” he added.
Award nominees or not, “Yellowstone” has a loyal fan base, an all-star cast, and a team of people who believe in what they create.
