LA GRANGE, IL – The Lycée in the Canton of Lyon is moving away from parts of its new grading policy in response to growing criticism.
In response, Waterman said grades for the next semester will include presentations, quizzes, reports and lab activities, performance reviews, and traditional testing and testing.
Parents also expressed concern that students are failing to complete their homework because they no longer count for grades.
In the second semester, Waterman said, students would be required to submit this work before a test if they wanted to be eligible for retakes. This, he said, would serve as motivation for doing his homework.
He said the school would also revert to the traditional schedule for final exams next semester in response to concerns about its elimination.
One of the petition organizers noted the policy changes in an update on the Change.org petition page.
“Perhaps this is progress,” the organizer wrote, “although I would like to warn everyone who signed the petition to keep in mind that LT’s original ‘Vision for Grading’ did not been retracted. “
The organizer, who did not release his name, said the policy always included “disturbing” language that said, “A rating should not measure effort, punctuality or attendance. A grade should not reward or punish a student for their participation.
At last week’s school board meeting, Waterman said politics has been at the center of the school’s efforts since 2017.
He said the school will share its first semester grading data next month. And he said the school planned to ask for comments on the scoring in a survey around the same time.
