Washington’s soccer team looks distraught from the outside, and coach Ron Rivera has admitted the team has a long way to go.
Washington lost 56-14 to Dallas on Sunday night. The team have played without a number of players, including their top two quarterbacks, due to COVID concerns. On top of that, before the game, defensive back Deshazor Everett was the driver in a fatal car crash. Tensions boiled over during the game, when two Washington players had a major altercation on the sidelines.
Rivera felt that all of these issues contributed to Washington’s loss to Dallas.
“You have to deal with these things, and it’s tough,” Rivera said, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “It’s not easy to try to separate and compartmentalize situations like this. It’s overflowing. It’s human nature. These guys are more than robots. These guys have feelings. They are players; they are people. They have a teammate going through something right now. It’s hard.
“You have an opportunity and not everyone is playing. It’s hard for them. This is not normal s—. This is real life, and this is what they are dealing with. They are young men and we are just trying to help them along the way. “
Rivera played down the fight on the sidelines, as did the players involved. Perhaps the head coach is right about the number of problems caused by the team’s hectic week. It’s inevitable, but it doesn’t look like they were able to rule it out enough given the gravity of Sunday’s game.
