ATHENS – Excessive speed is listed as the cause of an accident Sunday morning that claimed the life of a West Athens Limestreet firefighter, Captain Tracey Quinn of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office said on Tuesday.
William Koehler, 43, of Athens, was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center, where he was taken following the vehicle crash, Quinn said.
The cause of death was trauma from the crash, Quinn said.
At the time of the crash, Koehler was on his way to his mother’s home after learning she was having a heart attack, West Athens Fire Chief Tim Farrell said.
At around 7 a.m., Koehler was driving his van down Potic Mountain Road when he lost control of the truck and hit a tree, Quinn said.
Greene County 911 dispatched the West Athens Fire Company, Greene County Paramedics and the Catskill Ambulance to the scene.
A Life Net helicopter was requested and responded to the scene. But paramedics decided to take Koehler to hospital by ambulance, Quinn said.
Potic Mountain Road was closed for several hours in the crash area while the crash investigation took place.
The van was towed from the scene.
The accident was investigated by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. They were assisted by the state police.
Greene and Columbia County firefighters, family and friends continued to mourn Koehler’s death on Tuesday.
Koehler had been a member of the West Athens Limestreet department for two and a half years, Farrell said.
Hundreds of condolences have been posted in recent days on the Greene County Fire Department Facebook pages.
Firefighters up and down the Hudson Valley have reached out to Farrell to offer assistance since the news broke.
On Monday morning, the West Athens Fire Company released a statement when it posted the news on its website.
“It is with heavy hearts that members of the West Athens Lime Street Fire Company announce the death of firefighter William Koehler,” the statement read. “Will was an active firefighter who was always there to help when needed and who will be missed by everyone here in West Athens. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time. “
Arrangements for the funeral and visitation have not been announced at this time.
