Government to pursue 2G legislation, despite criticism

Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said the introduction of the 2G system, which restricts access to the premises to people who have been vaccinated or recently recovered from the coronavirus, is necessary to limit the lockdown.

De Jonge told reporters on Wednesday he would pursue legislation making the measure an option, as have some of the Netherlands’ neighboring countries. The new legislation should have been introduced earlier this month but was delayed due to lack of support in parliament.

The minister’s comments follow the publication of comments from the Judicial Council, which is advising the government on the legal implications of the new legislation.

The council is very critical of plans to allow companies to ask staff to show they have been vaccinated or have recently recovered from the coronavirus.

Critics argue that a switch to 2G would further exacerbate the divisions between those who have been vaccinated and the 1.5 million who have not.

MEPs are expected to debate the 2G and 3G proposals after the Christmas recess.
