Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has suggested that Fred and Scott McTominay just aren’t good enough for Manchester United.

Both midfielders have both come under criticism for their performances during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure, but the Norwegian has always stood by their side and defended the critics.

The duo have held onto their places in the starting XI since Ralf Rangnick took the lead but put on a disappointing performance, along with the rest of their team-mates, in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Monday.

This is already putting pressure on Rangnick, but Nicol believes the midfielder is a serious issue for the German to tackle.

“Look in the middle of the park, who’s going to have Fred and McTominay on their team?” Of the good sides, none of them, ”Nicol told ESPN FC.

“So you look at the top four and you’re like, ‘why aren’t these guys producing? “

“Well, do they have enough ball? Well if you can’t get enough of the ball against Newcastle, which frankly looks like they’re about to drop in my opinion, then what chance do you have?

“So you can have whoever you want up front that you can choose, if you can’t get them the ball you’re not going to score goals.

“And if the two in the middle can’t get the ball from the top four, and they don’t stop anyone, go to the baseline…”

“So even though it’s Rangnick’s fault, a lot of it is because the players just aren’t good enough.”

United are hoping to find their way back to victory tonight when they host Burnley at Old Trafford.

Rangnick will however have to make changes to his midfielder, with Bruno Fernandes being suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season.
