Well, the land of the Broncos …
We’re coming to the end of another year and soon to be the end of another frustrating season.
Once again we wonder if cheering for unlikely wins is really the right thing to do. Maybe we should be hoping for a big game with improved play instead… but secretly regret a loss to ensure regime change and a better draft position?
Ugh. I am not a tank defender. I still want the wins.
But I’m tired.
Tired of bad quarterback play.
Tired of the below average offensive line play.
Tired of wondering why – with two running backs averaging nearly five yards per run – this offense can’t establish a running game consistently.
Tired of listening to our defensive players pretend they’re not irritated that offense can’t score just three touchdowns as they consistently keep their opponents under 17 points.
I’m sick of losing seasons and I’m really sick of getting listless in the middle of the season because of it.
But above all – more than any other incompetence on this team – I’m tired of Pat Shurmur.
The Denver Broncos officially have ZERO pro bowl selections.
I blame Pat Shurmur.

It’s exhausting to see our offensive coordinator week after week wasting his talent with a bad game plan after a bad game plan (if in fact there is a game plan).
And then appear in front of the press without any responsibility for the horrific performance of the offense.
For example, that’s Shurmur’s answer to why the Broncos’ offense is consistently short in third and long situations.
“I consider each of these pieces to be a story. There are times in longer distance situations where they don’t allow you to throw the ball past the sticks, so you’re in a situation where you have to catch up and run for that. … You have to throw it under the sticks to get a completion and then you just have to run for it. Each of those games that you’re talking about, we had options beyond the sticks that maybe were covered, and then there were a few occasions where that just didn’t get done.
Obviously, QB play for these situations is important, and good cover or a wrong pass or dropped ball will occur to prevent the conversion.
But the Broncos’ abysmal 37% completion rate can’t just be blamed on poor player execution or excellent defensive coverage. It’s just as often Shurmur’s fault for designing a stick-short game that can’t gain yards after the catch or send guys down on roads that are low percentage completions for our QBs. .
Shurmur clearly fails to understand that HIS ONLY JOB as an offensive coordinator is to find the best plays for his QB’s skills that will actually and consistently allow the guys to open up beyond the sticks to get the first downs. The rest is up to the players to perform as called.
Problem is, the gambling appeal is crap.
But for Shurmur, every unconverted third party “has a story” and that clearly has nothing to do with their terrible sequencing.
Consider his response regarding his level of confidence that the Broncos offense can reestablish a strong identity in the running game:
“I’ve always said it’s important to get the ball rolling and when you do, we have to be efficient. We need to gain yards and I’m very confident. The focus was good, and we were able, in our eyes, to resolve the issues that presented themselves and like any next game that you go on and prove.
Somewhere in that word salad, Shurmur says he’s very confident in his two running backs – who he only gave the ball to seven times last week – to fix the running game because… they’re concentrated and moved on from the latest offensive debacle. ???
WTF? I don’t want you and the offense to keep going, Pat. I want you to study the movie and understand why the offense could only get 18 yards of run with the ball the entire game.
I feel like 99% of the people out there have no idea what a dangerous Noah Fant weapon can be and it’s all Pat Shurmur’s fault.

Then there was this gem, which was really all about softball about the improved opportunities last week for our tight ends (as in “Clue Hint, Pat … Use. TEs. More):
“I think every game is a different scenario. We were able to hit or shoot at the tight end of the field. We had a couple more visibly against the Raiders [and] it helps. Anytime a catcher can catch a ball on the court or be targeted on the court it helps you on offense, and we’ll just try to keep looking for opportunities to achieve that.
“Just try to look for opportunities ??? ” I hope you are joking?
Does this guy ever try to take control of a game with a scheme that takes into account what he has versus what another team is giving him? I’m all for finding weaknesses in the game to exploit, but in no way does Shurmur seem prepared before the game to accommodate another team’s strengths and attack their weaknesses.
Finally, in assessing what he would like to see from Drew Lock in terms of improvement this week, he could only offer that he would like to see Lock take a win for the Broncos.
“I think you want to see the quarterback lead you to victory. You want him to be able to execute the offense very effectively, deliver the ball on time and get us into the end zone.
At first glance, there is nothing wrong with this answer. We all want to see the quarterback lead the team to victory.
But in the context of an attack by Pat Shurmur – where the design of the game rarely matches the downside and distance or the strengths and weaknesses of the opponent – it seems a bit hypocritical to ask for efficiency without any accountability. for his absence in the last 15 games. .
If the #Broncos abandon their remaining two games, Pat Shurmur will hold the worst winning percentage (36.36%) of any offensive coordinator in franchise history.
