Allegations that a teacher was exchanging good grades for sexual favors at a Moroccan institution prompted other victims to break their silence after a similar case sparked outrage.

An instructor at a business school in the city of Oujda allegedly demanded sexual favors from a female student in exchange for favorable grades, local media reported.

An official from the Ministry of Education told AFP on Friday that the teacher had been suspended pending his appearance before a disciplinary council.

The ministry opened an investigation into similar accusations in the same institution and ordered the resignation of its director.

The case sparked an uproar on social media, where a coalition known as the “Outlaws” movement launched a #MeToo-style campaign to collect testimonies from other victims.

Earlier this month, four professors from a university near Casablanca appeared in court in a similar case, while a fifth faced separate charges of indecent assault and bodily harm.

A series of high-profile sexual harassment scandals have rocked Moroccan universities in recent years, but most have not resulted in trials, let alone convictions.

Rights groups say sexual violence is widespread in Morocco, but women are reluctant to report it for fear of reprisal or damage to their family’s reputation.

In 2018, after years of heated debate, Morocco changed its legislation so that perpetrators of “harassment, assault, sexual exploitation or ill-treatment” could face prison terms, but some argue that the law still does not protect them. women.
