Rio Ferdinand defended Ralf Rangnick’s side at Manchester United after coming under heavy criticism from ex-teammate Gary Neville.
Neville gave the Red Devils a scathing opinion after a poor performance saw them draw 1-1 with Newcastle on Monday night.
“The basics of the game, every battle they lost was a really bad performance,” Neville told Sky Sports after the game.
The result came on the heels of a narrow victory over struggling Norwich City, but Rangnick won two of their opening three league games after beating Crystal Palace in their first dugout match.
Rio Ferdinand, who played alongside Neville at Old Trafford, believes his former teammate’s comments were unfair and while the performance at Newcastle was not great there were some bright spots to be learned from the game.
“Against Newcastle we were poor and you just can’t get by,” Ferdinand said on Vibe with Five.
“But it’s still two out of three wins, albeit against Newcastle which has been the whip for a lot of teams.
“But a lot of the press came out after that game … even one of my old friends Gary Neville.
“I thought we were in a relegation battle listening to people’s comments and how the atmosphere around the club turned negative.
“Yes, we haven’t played against a brand of footballers that excites people or that fans would get used to, but it wasn’t like Ralf Rangnick was taking control of a fit team.
“You are moving quickly into the game against Burnley, you can tell Burnley played badly, but you still have to perform. You know in this league you can be beaten by anyone.
“Manchester United is a perfect example of that at home. But they could lighten their work. Manchester United had to go there and perform and get three points.”
The Red Devils are currently sixth in the Premier League table, but have only made 18 appearances due to postponements caused by COVID-19. They face the Wolves Monday night at Old Trafford.
