George Wills’ 2021 farewell comments poked fun at thoughtful attempts by progressives to better understand issues of racial and social justice. Tackling a paltry number of new language changes that reflect social concerns demeans change agents for better lives for marginalized people. Does he consider the people who vote against them to speak correctly on these issues? I doubt that! I would say the opposite side is gravely incapable of understanding the social issues that trap many Americans. Why did he not disdain the hate speech, including anti-Semitism, that comes out of the mouths of anti-progressives? If this population considers Marjorie Taylor Green-type voices to be legitimate, then this country will drown in hatred against the most caring officials, schools and communities who need support for their fight for those who struggle in this society. with its glaring inequalities. Wills’ high-end review is mistaken by omission and meanness. His contempt for people who care about social progress allows them to revert to Trumpian attitudes that have unfortunately captured too many Americans.
