Bosses at West London Grade B Men’s Prison – widely known as The Scrubs – called the police when the allegations surfaced.
Officers from Scotland Yard’s anti-corruption unit have arrested the man on suspicion of public misconduct and drug offenses.
He’s governor – not chief executive – of the 1,279-seat pseudo-Victorian whose past delays have included serial killer Ian Brady.
A source said: “Prison leaders acted quickly when the allegations came to light.
“They relate to his conduct with detainees involving bribes and drugs. It is a very serious situation.”
Prison staff were informed by email of his suspension. An officer from another prison was also suspended.
The Met said it investigated in conjunction with Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service Anti-Corruption Unit.
A spokesperson said: “As a result, an official in Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service was arrested on December 14 on suspicion of misconduct in public office and drug offenses.
“The man was questioned and released under investigation pending further investigation.”
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice added: “Two staff members have been suspended. It would be inappropriate to comment further while the police investigate. “
