VIJAYAWADA: The statement by the head of the state unit of the BJP, Somu Veerraju, that the party, if elected to power in the state, would offer cheap alcohol at Rs 75 or even Rs 50 per quarter of a bottle has attracted strong criticism from other political parties. Somu Veerraju had pledged that one crore of people in the state would consume alcohol every day and if they all voted for the BJP, alcohol prices would go down. CPI Secretary of State K Ramakrishna was the first to react strongly to the offer of alcohol. He wondered how the BJP, which talks about nationality and Hindutva, promises voters alcohol. He wanted to know if the alcohol pledge is national party policy or an exclusive offer for Andhra Pradesh. PA Deputy Chief Minister Narayana Swamy said the BJP had slumped to its lowest just to win the election. “Does Somu Veerraju run a political party or a liquor company?” ” He asked. Another Minister Balineni Srinivasa Reddy heckled against the “alcohol-for-vote promise” and said the BJP was desperately trying to woo voters. PA Congress Coordinating Committee member Sunkara Padmasree strongly criticized Somu Veerraju for his offer of alcohol. She suggested that BJP leaders take their president to a psychiatrist for his promise of alcohol to the people. She said the alcohol pledge indicates the power-dealing attitude of the BJP leaders. Somu Veerraju’s alcohol offering has also gone viral on social media. Netizens dragged the BJP chief for his frenzied statement aimed at attracting voters. Telangana’s minister, KTR, also reacted to the alcohol offer. He tweeted saying “AP BJP is dropping to new low.” He also wanted to know if the policy is limited to AP or extended to the nation. “The national policy of the BJP is to provide cheap alcohol at Rs 50 or is this exceptional offer only for states where desperation is high?”
Wah… what a ploy! What a pity AP BJP is stooping to a new low National BJP policy to provide cheap alcohol at 50… https://t.co/E3Gky3xzg1
