Allegation of embezzlement leaves former ticket agent distraught

A former bus ticket agent is angry and upset after being accused of embezzling around RM 192,000 by his former employer.

Ng Chan Seng, 51, said the company served him a formal notice on November 30 to return him RM192,613, which he allegedly contracted or was subject to legal action.

Denying the allegation, Chan Seng said he was told the money came from ticket sales that were owed to the company between 2017 and 2019.

“I used to sell tickets for the company at a bus station before I was fired during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

“I would bring the money back to the head office every fortnight,” he said at a press conference held by Perak MCA’s head of public service and complaints, Low Guo Nan.

“The accountant at the head office received the money and I didn’t come home until all the money had been accounted for.

“If there had been a discrepancy with the amount, I would have been told to clear the arrears before I was allowed to leave,” he said, adding that he had never had any problems at during his 12 years with the company.

Chan Seng, a father of three, said he was first contacted by a company director, known only as Ng, about this in June 2020.

“In July, she came to my house and asked me to return the money, which I denied taking,” he said.

“I went to the head office in August to ask for an explanation and evidence, but another high-ranking officer told me that I was not going to be held responsible for the money lost.

“Thinking that I was clear, I moved on with my life before receiving the letter of request in November 2021.”

Chan Seng, who currently drives for an electronic appeals service, said he was concerned the case could go to court.

“I still have to take care of three young children, including a 10 month old baby.

“I am not very educated and I hope the company will investigate the matter again and not make me the scapegoat,” he said.

During the press conference, Low also contacted Ng and was told that the company had followed all procedures.

Low said he would arrange a meeting between Chang Seng and the bus company to sort out the issue.

“If indeed the case is to go to court, I will arrange legal aid for Chan Seng,” he said. – By IVAN LOH
