Not everyone believes in Jimmy Garoppolo’s arm strength and ability to throw the ball deep, but head coach Kyle Shanahan says Garoppolo compares favorably to any quarterback he has resulted in these areas.
The topic was brought up during an interview with Shanahan this week with 49ers radio host Greg Papa when Papa spoke about rookie Trey Lance’s strength in deep throwing, which was on display when he left against the Houston Texans last Sunday. Shanahan said Lance’s deep ball ability “helps a lot” on offense, but also said Garoppolo didn’t deserve some of the criticism he received in this area.
“I think this is something that Jimmy is being unfairly criticized for because Jimmy can throw the ball as far as anyone else I have had,” Shanahan said. “Some people act like so. Jimmy had a weak arm – that’s just completely wrong. But we didn’t hit a lot of deep balls – I understand that. It goes with all of us.
“But Trey, he’s had a knack for it ever since we started watching him in college. He has a good idea when to do it, when not to do it. He’s got a good touch and he definitely has the strength to do it. When you can get some of those bigger passes any week, that opens everything up and makes the easier, more consistent, rather good. “
The most notable example of Lance’s prowess in the game against the Texans was a 45-yard touchdown pass he completed against Deebo Samuel in the fourth quarter of the 23-7 victory. Shanahan told Papa that the play was identical to the one Lance had similar success with in the preseason.
“It’s a corner post,” Shanahan said. “We’re doing it from our bootlegs. It’s the same that Trent Sherfield caught in the preseason on Trey’s first long touchdown. But we do a bootleg and they cut the crosser, and we perform a corner post. above safety. The only problem is when they cut the cross, the corner was replaced. So Deebo is going to run into that corner but then he went through that corner. It’s a good job of Trey’s part of being patient with that, so we got the touch. “

The 49ers are yet to announce which quarterback will start the regular season finale in Los Angeles against the Rams on Sunday (4:25 p.m. ET / 1:25 p.m. PT, FOX) after Lance replaced injured Garoppolo last week. But it looks like Garoppolo will be able to recover from the thumb injury he suffered against the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 22 and held him on the sidelines for the game against the Texans.
“I think he’s a lot further along this week,” Shanahan told Papa. “It’s another week. It’s gotten better. I know we’re going to tackle the wire here with that, but I’m sure Jimmy is going to beat us on that. I think he’s ready to compete, ready to go. I hope all will be well. ”
