It’s over 43,000 years of watch time, doo doo doo doo doo doo
If you’re a parent of a toddler, you know all too well the videos your child insists on watching over and over (and over again). Don’t worry, your child is not broken; repetition is part of normal development. The universality of this experience is evident when watching YouTube’s top videos and six of the top 10 are clearly aimed at young eyes. King of them all has to be Baby Shark, who just became the first video to hit 10 billion views on the platform.
Pinkfong’s Baby Shark has held the top spot for a while now, but only just hit that lofty 10B (via The Verge). It surpassed the former most-watched video (Despacito by Luis Fonsi) in November 2020, which had over seven billion views at the time. This means that over the past year it has been viewed nearly three billion more times, more than the combined populations of India and China.

The song’s origins are lost in the murky depths of history, but most speculation places its debut just after the release of Jaws (yeah, that long ago). Before Pinkfong uploaded their initial release in 2015, there was the German recording which became a dance hit in Europe in 2007, and there are a few English uploads around the same time. These early uploaders all acknowledge having picked up the song from summer camps or youth groups years before recording their versions.
If you haven’t had enough of Baby Shark at this point, you probably never will, but there’s still plenty of media out there to satiate your voracious hunger for all things Baby Shark. Almost every kid’s channel on YouTube has its own version of the song. And if that’s not enough, there’s also a cereal, a musical, a TV show, and books. Anyway, we’re going to be stuck with Baby Shark for a while.
