Calcutta: Amid verbal bickering between some of its old guards and young leaders, the Trinamool Congress has warned them against taking any action for criticizing party colleagues in public forums and the media.

The TMC said that if a party leader disparages other members in the media instead of discussing the issue within the party, he would face action from his disciplinary committee.

“We ask all concerned to stop issuing statements and discussing matters within the party. Those who do not comply with this, they will be reported to the Disciplinary Committee and subject to appropriate action,” said party general secretary Partha Chatterjee to reporters, PTI reported. .

The decision comes after three-time TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee openly criticized the party’s National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s Diamond Harbor model to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The Diamond Harbor model involves several measures to contain COVID-19, including a maximum number of tests on a single day, prohibiting all political, social and religious meetings until the end of February.

Criticizing the model, Kalyan said, “Which Diamond Harbor model? There is only one model that Mamata Banerjee came up with. We all fight COVID in our own way,” he had said.

He had also criticized Abhishek Banerjee, who is the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, for going public with his views and alleging he spoke in the language of the opposition BJP.

“I can have my own opinion on some issues. But should I take it outside? We should never do that. There is a rule in an organization. It seems like someone speaks in the language of opposition BJP. The people of the state had voted for Mamata Banerjee, our leader, in the previous elections. She is my leader. I don’t consider anyone else as my leader,” he said.

Kalyan’s remarks were criticized by his party colleagues, including Kunal Ghosh and Aparupa Poddar, who demanded his resignation as chief party whip in Lok Sabha for violating his discipline.
