HERRIMAN It happened again. Firefighters were called to a fire caused by a charging hoverboard that somehow caught fire.
“Once in a while, these chargers overheat and only the batteries inside explode,” said Patrick Costin, public information officer with the Unified Fire Authority.
The latest incident happened at a Herriman home Thursday night.
A family was charging a hoverboard in their garage when they started to smell smoke.
When the flames started to burn, the family got out of the house and called 911.
“The family had just bought it. I plugged it in to try and charge it. Next thing you know, I saw a whole lot of smoke,” Costin said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire before the flames spread to the rest of the house.

However, news of what happened quickly spread to the Miner family.
“I can’t believe this has happened again,” Craig Miner said.
“Shocked,” said Craig’s wife, Tamilisa.
A hoverboard being charged at their Lehi home last summer also caught fire. Home surveillance video showed when he started smoking, and when the fire broke out the explosion sent flaming batteries flying through the air.
“We had huge flames everywhere,” Tamilisa said.
The miners spoke to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission about their incident. They also researched hoverboard fires and couldn’t believe what they found.
“I found out we were on the 216th hoverboard fire,” Tamilisa said. “There had been recalls, but years ago.”
However, these types of hoverboard fires still happen.
Even though it’s unlikely to happen, the miners have made it their goal to let families know that it can happen. Like at her house last summer, and now at the Herrimans on Thursday night.
“Maybe yours will be fine, but maybe not,” she said. “And that’s the problem is, you just don’t know.”
