‘Don’t blame the players, it’s the system’: Kevin Pietersen gives ECB baton as England lose Ashes 2021-22

Kevin Pietersen gives the baton to the ECB: The former England striker hopes to see substantial changes in the English county scene.

Former England big names are not holding back their criticism of the players and the England Cricket Board after England lost 0-4 in the recent Ashes 2021-22.

Having last won an Ashes Test away more than a decade ago, England have since lost 13 and drawn two to record three consecutive Ashes shambolic campaigns in Australia.

A 271 run chase in a pink ball test was never expected to be an easy task for the visitors, but the fact that they went it all for 124 in 38.5 overs was a testament to their abyssal strike throughout the tour.

“It was embarrassing. Intrepid. The only thing we need to do now is get our heads out of the sand, pull ourselves together and put red ball cricket first,” former England captain Sir Ian Botham told 7 Cricket after the climax of the fifth Test at Hobart.

Former batsman Kevin Pietersen, who has been quite vocal about his criticism of the ECB (England Cricket Board) and the shortcomings of the current English county system, took to social media platform Twitter to express his disapproval of the “current system”.

“Let’s see what the bosses at @englandcricket do about the English cricket. It’s been there for everyone to see for years! Don’t blame the players, it’s the system!” read Pietersen’s tweet after England’s defeat today.

It should be mentioned that England were in a similar position when it came to white-ball cricket after the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. A complete overhaul of their white ball setup propelled them to a World Cup victory in 2019 on home soil. Although in red ball cricket this time around, ECB once again finds itself in a position to take bold and tough decisions.
