Ludhiana: As soon as Congress announced candidates in nine of the district’s 14 precincts, lobbyists intensified their lobbying against certain candidates to try to get the party to reconsider its decision before it was too late. On Sunday, former Congress adviser Parminder Mehta, who is also OSD to Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu, held a press conference and asked the Congress leadership to reconsider the ticket for MP Surinder Dawar in the central constituency. He claimed Dawar’s report falls short. Mehta had also highlighted MLA’s corrupt practices earlier as well. He claimed that he gave everything in writing to senior management. But surprisingly, the party leaders didn’t investigate and he got the ticket again. He said many of the names on the candidate list are those against whom several complaints are pending. He alleged that Dawar’s actions damaged the party’s image. He alleged that Dawar attacked his opponents with bogus police cases in which some of the party workers were also included. Mehta also alleged that the party gave tickets to these MPs fearing that they would go to Captain Amarinder Singh’s party. “But these corrupt people can leave even after winning the elections,” he added. However, Dawar said the allegations were baseless. “Mehta is an opportunist who left Congress for the BJP. When things didn’t go well for him, he came back,” he said, adding that the party had given him a chance for the fifth time.
