Kyle Shanahan explains Jimmy G was to blame for crucial penalty

The San Francisco 49ers pulled off a thrilling 23-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium, but a crucial late-game error almost came back to haunt them.

Fourth and first late in the fourth quarter, tackle Trent Williams was penalized for a false start on a QB sneak that would have sealed the deal on the spot for the 49ers. But, as Kyle Shanahan explained after the game, Jimmy Garoppolo was actually to blame for the penalty.

Via Pro Football Talk:

We just went into an imbalance,” Shanahan said, via NBCSportsBayArea.com. It was on the silent count and it was the stealth quarterback all the way, but Jimmy was really fired up because of the look. I didn’t let Trent prepare. He must let him prepare. It didn’t end up being a problem, it would have been hard to answer that one if it was.

The 49ers ended up having to punt and the Cowboys put on a pretty impressive workout. But, Dak Prescott decided to kick the ball himself with only about 10 seconds left and then the ref appeared to be out of position before Dallas could get another snap. Talk about the weirdest ending to a game.

Jimmy G and Shanahan breathed a sigh of relief as the 49ers now face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Surely Garoppolo wouldn’t have lived too quickly if Dallas had scored a game-winning touchdown.
