Jack Easterby’s ‘a bit unfair’ review

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio believes the criticism from executive vice president of football operations Jack Easterby has been unfair.

Easterby, who was hired in April 2019 as vice president of team development and later promoted to his current role in January 2020, has come under intense criticism from the Houston media and nationals as the Texans posted records of 4-12 and 4-13 since his promotion.

The perception is that Easterby has too much say in the organization, which has led to bad contracts and other deleterious results.

While that may have been the case when Bill O’Brien was manager and general manager, Caserio insisted on “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 on Tuesday that Easterby is no longer as heavily involved in football decisions. soccer.

“Jack has been a hot topic for a lot of people,” Caserio said. “I would honestly say that some of the reviews have been unfair. I think Jack has an important operational and logistical role. That’s why he was brought here. This is his role in the football operation. I talked about it last spring. Everything related to decision-making in football, be it its players, contract signings, scouting, analysis of drafts, all of this is within my competence. So I would say if you look at an entire football operation, it takes a number of different people.

Caserio suggested that the collaborative effort to build a successful football team requires multiple entry points and that there is a misperception of Easterby’s role.

Says Caserio: “I would say I have a lot of respect and appreciation for the work that Jack does, and frankly, not many people really understand the cogs and bolts of it. But when you get the chance to hang out with Jack, I mean, you realize it’s probably not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I would say that from his point of view, it has always been an operational and logistical point of view, and there are certain areas that are perhaps in his competence and that communicate well, and I can manage the areas of football. If there’s anything we can collectively talk about as a whole, whether it’s myself, Jack, the head coach, whoever it is, then those lines of communication are open.

Caserio and Easterby look back to their time with the New England Patriots from 2013 to 2018 when he was a character coach. The Patriots’ last three Super Bowl victories have come during this span with wins at the end of the 2014, 2016 and 2018 seasons. As winning the World Championships does, it has cemented the bond between two ex-Patriots. .

“Look, Jacks has been a punching bag ever since he got here,” Caserio said. “Some of that, I honestly think, was a bit unfair. Everyone has an opinion and they are certainly entitled to their opinion. Well, keep moving forward.

The Texans’ most pressing agenda is to find their fifth full-time coach in team history. Easterby may have a say in this decision, but Caserio has tried to make it clear that he will not be a decider on such consequential football moves.
