WSPA presenter Amy Wood’s daughter is apologizing after a video emerged last week showing her racial slurs.
Gracie Wood posted an apology video on Instagram where she says she’s sorry for the “awful and disgusting” things she said and for hurting people from Black, Hispanic, Jewish, Asian, Middle-Eastern communities. oriental and LGBTQ+.
“There is absolutely no excuse for anything that came out of my mouth and I can only imagine the pain people felt watching these videos,” Wood said.
Wood also said she wasn’t brought up to believe these things, but she understands that doesn’t change the impact of her words. She said she met several leaders in the communities she offended and several people contacted her for guidance.
“I can’t even imagine the pain and struggle it was to be a minority,” Wood said. “And I know I will never fully understand that. But hopefully I will learn and become much more respectful than I was in those videos to these people and to minority communities.
She also said she was no longer attending her high school and would not be allowed to walk to graduation and added that there would be “several other consequences to come.”
GoUpstate, which first broke the news, said Woods High School, Oakbrook Prep released the following statement on its social media platforms along with a letter to school families on January 12:
“We have been made aware of recent statements by an Oakbrook student. Although these statements were made off campus at a non-school related event, we find these comments and the behavior of those involved offensive and extremely disappointing. Statements made do not reflect Oakbrook’s mission and core values, which are academic excellence, character, community, creativity, and diversity. As advocates for all of God’s people, we strive to create a respectful and inclusive community based on biblical principle and appreciating the richness of different cultures and viewpoints. Our school leadership prayerfully considers actions we can take to strengthen our core values, allow our students and staff to learn from this experience, and promote a caring environment where everyone in our community feels respected and valued. .
