Wisconsin Rep. Mark Pocan calls for federal probe into false voter claims

Democratic U.S. Representative Mark Pocan has asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to open a Justice Department investigation into ten Wisconsin Republicans who allegedly submitted false election documents claiming former President Donald Trump won the state in 2020 .

In his letter to Garland, Pocan wrote that this investigation is relevant to help prevent future voter fraud, according to The Associated Press.

“With less than a year to go before the next federal election, it is imperative that the Department of Justice act on this issue to deter other officials who may seek to engage in voter fraud,” Pocan’s letter said. cited by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Westphal’s letter also references six other states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania — where individuals allegedly submitted fake voters and voter certificates.

At a press conference on Thursday, Wisconsin attorney Jeffery Mandell, who previously filed a complaint about the matter, released a copy of an envelope he said showed Republicans had sent related documents. in the election on Dec. 16, 2020, after court cases regarding Biden’s victory in the state were over, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“Not only did they do it on the 14th, but then they had two full days of news and information before they made the conscious decision to submit these documents,” Mandell told the newspaper.

Republicans involved in the case say they submitted the voter documents in case the courts sided with Trump, the Journal Sentinel added.

Adam Jarchow, a former state representative running in the GOP primary for attorney general, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that if elected, he would not pursue that investigation.

“What they were doing there, as I understand it, is they were using a long-standing legal strategy under the guidance of election lawyers to make sure they retained their ability to oppose the future if they wanted to,” Jarchow said. by paper.

In Michigan and New Mexico, attorneys general have already asked federal prosecutors to investigate allegations of misrepresentation by voters, the AP reported.
