Subban made the comments late Sunday night following Saturday’s incident involving Jordan Subban in an ECHL game. The league has suspended Jacksonville Icemen defenseman Jacob Panetta for launching a racist taunt at young Subban. The Icemen then released Panetta.
“I haven’t slept much,” PK Subban said. “Obviously I had a conversation with my family…pure disappointment. It’s unpleasant. There’s no place for that in our game. I’m embarrassed because our game is better than that. What I think about are all the great people and great things about our game that I love.
“The unfortunate thing is not just the incident; what’s unfortunate is how many kids are dealing with this every day and it’s not being disclosed,” Subban added. “A lot of people talk about me on social media and what I’m doing in my time, but I’ve done a lot of community work. … And in that case, without this following, without this platform, am I here right now? Does ESPN talk about it? Does everyone outside the hockey world talk about it? Probably not, so it’s unfortunate.

More like @JPanetta12 was too cowardly to fight me and as soon as I started turning his back on me he started monkeying at me so I punched him in the face a couple times and he tortured himself like the coward that he is. There, it’s fixed 👍🏾 https://t.co/JtPqpN9wwE

Subban and Panetta received major penalties and game fouls and were ejected for the fight.
Panetta posted a video to Twitter on Sunday night apologizing for his actions, which he said were not “racially motivated.” Instead, Panetta said his taunt was “a tough bodybuilder type gesture towards him” that he made towards other players. He said there was a video of him doing it to other players.
“You’re only tough when the refs get in the way,” Panetta told Jordan Subban during the skirmish.
“My actions towards Jordan were not because of race and were not intended as a racial gesture,” Panetta said. “I hadn’t considered at the time that it would be seen as a racial gesture, and I tried to convey that to Jordan when we were sent to the locker room during the game.

“I see now from Jordan’s reaction that he and others certainly saw it as a racial gesture, and that my actions caused a lot of anger…I want to express to everyone, especially to Jordan, that my actions were not racially motivated at all, and I sincerely apologize for the pain, suffering and anger my actions have caused him, his family and all those who were injured.

PK Subban said he and his brothers — including Buffalo Sabers goaltender Malcolm Subban — are used to dealing with racist incidents.
“We don’t need anyone’s pity. No one felt sorry for us when we went through our experiences growing up,” PK Subban said. “We don’t expect anyone to feel sorry, and we don’t expect anyone to truly understand that it’s not black. If you’re not black, you won’t understand this, and that’s okay.
