Disney responded to Peter Dinklage’s recent harsh criticism of the upcoming live-action remake of Snow White on Tuesday.
The Emmy-winning Game of Thrones star was a guest on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast for an episode released Monday, in which he blasted the announced movie based on the classic 1937 animated image when he noted West Side Story breakout cast Rachel Zegler.
“Literally, no offense to anyone, but I was a little surprised when they were very proud to cast a Latin actress as Snow White – but you still tell the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Dinklage said. in Maroon. “Step back and look at what you are doing there. That does not make any sense. You’re progressive in a way, but you keep doing this fucking backwards story about seven dwarfs living together in a cave. What the hell are you doing, man? Did I do nothing to advance the cause from my platform? I guess I’m not strong enough. Dinklage is not involved in the Disney project.
Disney tried to set the record straight following the remarks.
“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes of the original animated film, we’re taking a different approach with these seven characters and consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film enters production after a long development period,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
Still years after its release, Snow White will have cultural consultants, just like other live-action films such as Aladdin and Mulan. The film has been in development for three years; the studio has been reimagining dwarf characters from the earliest stages.
Joining Zegler in the live-action feature is Tony Award-winning Andrew Burnap and Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen in the story that Marc Webb directs. Marc Platt, the Oscar-nominated producer who also worked on the live-action rendition of The Little Mermaid for the studio, is producing.
