Apex Legends Season 12 launch trailer sees Maggie blamed for Olympus falling from the sky

Respawn has released the cinematic launch trailer for Apex Legends Season 12. The trailer features Mad Maggie’s introduction to the Apex games, while also teasing her abilities, changes to Olympus, and a sinister plot concocted by Duardo Silva (Octane’s father).

As seen in the trailer, Maggie is literally thrown into Apex Games’ latest game as punishment for her crimes against the Syndicate. Duardo reveals that he placed Maggie in the games to act as a villain, someone to be blamed and distracted from his actions, as he teleports Olympus to a new location.

The trailer also gives us a clue about Maggie’s abilities. At 0:38, Maggie throws a gadget at a wall between her and Horizon and Crypto. The two legends on his heels have their faces full of fire as the gadget ejects flames from either side of the wall. It feels like a tactical ability – a way for Maggie to deter pursuers or flush out enemies.

I think we see Maggie’s passive ability at 0:54, 2:06, and 2:51. Maggie starts to glow, almost like she’s on fire – it looks like she’s running a little faster too. Maybe Maggie naturally runs faster when running in a straight line or when sprinting towards an enemy? We also see Maggie walk through Fuse’s ultimate ability without a scratch so her passive ability can make her more resistant to flame damage.

What is most likely Maggie’s ultimate ability is seen at 2:25 – the giant bomb-like spinning top that is thrown at Fuse and temporarily stuns him. It appears to be the gadget seen in her character art, embedded below.

What we see in the trailer sort of matches the abilities of one of Apex Legends’ datamined characters. Called “Downfall”, this supposed legend has fire-based abilities. Their passive ability is that they create “anger” when they deal damage, eventually becoming immune to fire once their anger gauge is filled. Downfall’s tactical ability is described as a Molotov cocktail-like explosive and their ultimate is a rocket-propelled bomb that drops mines. Based on the launch trailer, Maggie doesn’t exactly fit those descriptions, but maybe Downfall was the legend’s first shot in season 12.

The trailer also shows that Respawn’s insatiable desire to destroy the maps he lovingly creates has yet to be quenched, as Olympus takes major damage after being teleported to a new location and falling from the sky. Olympus has been touted as the most pristine map in Apex Legends, but after dropping several meters through the air, it looks like much of the map will eventually shatter.

Apex Legends Season 12 is called Defiance and is set to begin on February 8. Along with the addition of Mad Maggie, Season 12 will introduce a new limited-time 9v9 mode.
