Former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia had some choice words for ESPN analyst Mina Kimes this week after criticizing 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s recent play. Garcia’s comments quickly made the rounds and had many jumping to Kimes’ defense.
Garcia had the opportunity to apologize but chose not to. Instead, he doubled down angrily. He said he didn’t owe Kimes an apology and was not sexist. He also made it clear that he doesn’t care about any backlash he might receive.
“Well, first of all, I don’t owe anyone an apology for my beliefs and my experience as a quarterback. The difficulty of this position, the expectations in this position, how much you have to be one of the 32 starters in the National Football League from a mental standpoint, from a physical standpoint People want to comment and rip, tear down individuals based on stats – the only stat that matters right now is know if you win or lose games there was nothing sexist from what i had to say apart from the fact that yes women don’t play professional football there are women who participate in football, but if it was a man who said the same thing, I would have had the same answer for this man, who never stood in the pocket, who never issued a pass from touchdown, who has never taken a hit to the head trying to play from inside the pocket.”

The former 49ers QB and four-time Pro Bowler made his comments on the Steiny & Guru show on 95.7 THE GAME in San Francisco. He claimed he was simply responding to a post on his feed that featured video of Kimes’ analysis and didn’t know who she was. He also said he just wanted to offer his support to Garoppolo.
“Hey, he knows he needs to play better. We’re all very self-critical at this level of how we play the game. If we’re not, we wouldn’t be at this level. He’s more critical of him -even someone else maybe. [Kimes] was the mouth at the end of the video post that was shared. If it had been Skip Bayless, if it had been you, if it had been anyone else I saw tearing up the 49ers quarterback, I would have said the same thing. It had nothing to do with her being a woman, it was just when I got the hang of it.”
Garcia then listed his accomplishments as an undrafted NFL player and reiterated that no one who hasn’t played can analyze the sport.
Kimes said, in essence, the 49ers got to the NFC Championship Game despite Garoppolo.

“Jimmy Garoppolo is not the reason they win,” Kimes said during “First Take” Tuesday morning. “They win with him, but not because of him… He posted the second lowest QBR in 15 years [against the Packers].”
Garcia took particular umbrage, pointing out that Kimes had never played football. And that, in turn, got people to support Kimes.

“Who the hell is Mina Kimes and when was the last time she threw a touchdown pass in a game? Never ! Never ! to play the QB position or any position in the NFL.
The fact that there are people out there who have a platform to talk about something they’ve never done is hilarious and that’s the way to look at it, it’s a joke ! So let’s laugh at her and support Jimmy, root our Niners to go out and beat the living f—k of one more team. That’s what it takes. She will never know this feeling. Can I get an amen? Peace.”
Garoppolo completed 27 of 44 passes for 303 yards and two interceptions in the Niners’ two playoff games this year.
