A report has given an intriguing reason why Luis Diaz is set to join Liverpool rather than Tottenham.
The Porto striker has long been on Liverpool’s radar as they try to find successors to Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. However, Tottenham chief Fabio Paratici got to work on a potential deal to take Diaz to north London earlier this week.
Spurs were prepared to pay £37m, plus an additional £9m, to sign the Colombia international. But Liverpool quickly ran to snatch him from their grip.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have submitted an offer worth €40m (£33.2m) plus €25m (£20.7m) in bonuses Friday.
That seems enough, as Liverpool are now discussing the finer details with Porto. Diaz is preparing to sign a five-year contract with the Anfield club.
In response, Tottenham have made a £100,000 bid for Lewes winger Ollie Tanner, who plays in the seventh tier of English football.
They have also set their sights on Juventus man Dejan Kulusevski, with club president Daniel Levy in full ‘panic mode’.
Jorge Mendes implicated in Luis Diaz failure
Sport Witness, citing Portuguese newspaper Record, are trying to explain why Diaz will partner Jurgen Klopp, rather than Antonio Conte.
They claim the involvement of high-profile agent Jorge Mendes has caused problems, including “friction” with another representative.
Mendes gave Paratici the idea of landing Diaz from Porto. But the Portuguese club had already given the striker’s agent, Raul Costa, the “mandate” to conclude an agreement with an English club.
This meant that the agent fee, worth 10%, would have been doubled on any transfer to Tottenham.
As Liverpool did not have an agreement with Mendes, their offer was less complex, which allowed him to pass more quickly.

Brighton for Tottenham pariah
Meanwhile, Brighton are reportedly considering a move for Tottenham defender Joe Rodon as Newcastle close in on signing Seagulls centre-back Dan Burn.
It emerged on Wednesday that Newcastle had already offered £8m for the 29-year-old defender. This was rejected by Brighton. But it looks like Eddie Howe is confident of making more additions at the end of the month.
“We hope to get closer to finalizing a transfer for one player,” he said on Friday.
Brighton manager Graham Potter is wasting little time looking for someone to fill the possible void, according to football.london. Rodon has become a peripheral figure for Spurs since joining the club in October 2020.
He was handed a five-year contract but saw little action, with eight starts among 12 top-flight outings in 2020-21. And the Wales international has played just 78 minutes of league football since leaving this season.
