Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
United have announced Greenwood, 20, will not play or train as police and the club work to establish the full circumstances surrounding images and an audio file which circulated on social media on Sunday .
A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: “Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of images and videos on online social media posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical abuse. An investigation has been opened and following investigations we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Investigations are ongoing.
A statement released by United read: “Mason Greenwood will not be returning to training or playing games until further notice.”
In an earlier statement released on Sunday morning, United said they were launching their own investigation before announcing Greenwood’s suspension.
The statement read: “We are aware of the images and allegations circulating on social media.
“We will make no further comment until the facts are established. Manchester United do not tolerate any form of violence.”
