Jaquiski Tartt says dropped interception in 49ers loss deserves criticism

Jaquiski Tartt had a game-changing interception on his fingertips in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship Game on Sunday night. Then in the blink of an eye, the ball hit the ground at SoFi Stadium and it could have sealed the fate of the 49ers in their crushing 20-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

As the 49ers clung to a 17-14 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation time, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford broadcast the ball into midfield intending to hit Van Jefferson. But the pass was a long way off and Tartt spun under, laying down a surefire interception. Instead, he jerked him off and dropped him.

The Rams fell and kicked the tying pitch.

Shortly after the match ended, Tartt sent out a tweet accepting all criticism for the missed interception.

No excuses!! I deserve all the reviews in my own way! Opportunity of which I dream I missed!!! Forget my brothers!! It still won’t define me as a person/player. Only will become stronger and better… #Believdat

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters he hadn’t spoken to Tartt, but had praise for the 29-year-old.

“I haven’t had a chance to talk to him, but Tartt has done a lot of good things,” Shanahan said. “I thought he was one of the best players on the pitch last week against Green Bay. I love that he’s been in our team since I’ve been here. I know he’s disappointed with the fall that he had, but there are a lot of other games in the game and I’m very happy that Tartt was part of our team this year.”

Tartt’s fall certainly didn’t cost the 49ers the game. The Rams were still stuck at their own 15-yard line after that play. But if he made that interception, San Francisco would have taken time and possibly extended their lead.

Instead, the Rams took advantage and sent the 49ers to the offseason.
